Deerfield Lake
There is a movement to raise the no wake zone ...
If you
haven’t heard already, there is a movement to raise the no wake zone of
Deerfield Lake from 5 mph to 25 miles per hour.
Can’t be? Yep, it is going before
the Game, Fish and Parks Commission on Thursday, June 6.
Let’s talk about Deerfield Lake. All lakes in the Black Hills are actually reservoirs, as they’re man-made holding ponds, using some type of a dam system. Kind of like a beaver dam. We call them lakes as it just doesn’t seem right to say, “Honey, let’s load up the kids and head out to the reservoir.”
Some stats on Deerfield Lake:
*Located in western Pennington County, part of Legislative District 30.
*Acres: 414
*Mean depth: 30.4 feet
*Maximum depth: 85 feet
*Elevation: 5900 feet, making it the highest elevated lake in South Dakota
*Shore length: 10 miles
*Fish: rainbow trout, brook trout and splake. Splake is a cross between a brook trout and a lake trout.
*Age of reservoir: 74 years
The current 5 mph wake rule makes it a kayak/canoe lake. You could troll with a motor, but can’t exceed 5 mph, so no one does, or at least very few. Probably the main issue here is noise. There is something about the peace and tranquility at Deerfield Lake that calms your soul. The sound of a jet ski just doesn’t seem right.
So, what now? The GF&P Commission meeting starts at 1 pm east river time, June 6, 2019. The location is 920 West Sioux Avenue, Pierre, SD. It’s held at the Ramkota Hotel, the first place on the left coming off the bridge from Fort Pierre. If you decide to attend, a 2 pm (east river time) public testimony will be held. Anyone can testify. You just have to sign in and state what topic you wish to testify about. I will be there and can assist anyone wishing to talk. After testimony, which usually is capped at one hour, you are free to leave or stay for the remainder of the day. The GF&P Commission also will meet the following day, June 7, and that is also open to the public.
So, who decides? What is the make-up of the GF&P Commission? Good question. The GF&P has 8 members. They are appointed by the governor for a 4-year period. A board member can serve only 2 four-year terms.
*No more than four members can be from the same political party. This means there can’t be more than 4 Republicans or 4 Democrats/Independents.
*Not less than four shall be farmers, residing on the farm, and engaging in agriculture deriving 2/3rds of their gross annual income from crop or livestock.
*Not less than 3 commissioners shall reside west river, and not less than 5 reside east river.
The Secretary of Game, Fish and Parks, a cabinet position appointed by the governor, sits on the commission in an advisory role.
Current members of the GF&P Commission are:
Chair – Gary Jensen, Rapid City, 605-484-3319
Vice Chair – Scott Phillips, New Underwood, 605-985-5573
Russel Olson, Wentworth, 605-483-2223
Doug Sharp, Watertown, 605-886-8081
Jon Locken, Bath, 605-380-8322
Mary Anne Boyd, Yankton, 605-260-8215
Travis Bies, 605-390-0889
Robert Whitmyre, Webster, phone not available
Secretary of GF&P: Kelly Hepler
In closing, if you have strong feelings regarding this proposed wake mile per hour change, call one of the commissioners (2 out of the 8 are from District 30), and/or come to Pierre and testify. Of course, you can always contact me with your concerns.
To the citizens of District 30 and to the men and women in uniform, in honor of all who served, in respectful memory of all who fell, and in great appreciation to those who serve today, Thank You, for giving me the opportunity to serve you.
Tim R. Goodwin, District 30 Representative
