Exciting Times for South Dakota
Legislative Week 1
Greetings! Week one is in the past! Friday was a short day as everyone wanted to get home before dark with the high winds and, in eastern South Dakota, blowing snow. We did start Friday with a briefing from the South Dakota Air and Army National Guard. Major General Jeff Marlette, who is the Adjutant General, did a remarkable job briefing the legislators on the state of the National Guard. It’s probably one of the session’s highlights, listening to what our Guard has accomplished in defense of our great state and nation. Thank you General for your leadership in commanding the finest National Guard in the country.
We started week one with the Governor’s State of the State address. All I could say when it was over was, “WOW!” Here are some areas Governor Noem is asking the House and Senate to pass this session:
*Banning abortions that take place specifically due to a Down Syndrome diagnosis.
*Invest $40 million into college scholarships so students can be matched with high demand career opportunities.
*Extending broadband internet access to the 135,000 South Dakotans who lack it.
*Removing “government red tape” in health care.
Like I mentioned in last week’s article, if we could accomplish just two things, those being high speed internet to every location in our district and second, install cell towers ensuring coverage to every resident in District 30, that would be a very successful legislative session. I’ll be doing a jig dance if we get these two huge projects funded. Our citizens are already overtaxed, particularly regarding property taxes. If we can get this done, we truly are representing our citizens and truly improving their quality of life. Onward and upward in this fast-paced information age!
Other areas covered in the Governor’s speech included economic development. Using an example of a 200 million dollar project building a new Amazon distribution center in Sioux Falls. Also, in Sioux Falls, a $500 million project building a new food production facility by CJ Foods which was previously Schwan’s Ice Cream Corp.
As to our neck of the woods, not mentioned in her speech but moving full speed ahead is the B21 Raider Squadron and the Training Squadron for the B21 coming to Ellsworth Air Force Base. This is huge economic development for the Black Hills.
In closing, these are very exciting times for South Dakota and particularly for our district. Imagine the possibilities for our district if every location has high speed internet and good clear cell service!
To the citizens of South Dakota and to the men and women in uniform, in honor of all who served, in respectful memory of all who fell, and in great appreciation to those who serve today, Thank You, for giving me the opportunity to represent you.
Tim R. Goodwin, District 30 Representative
