From the Desk of Tim Goodwin
Greetings! Thank you for the responses to the gun poll
published in last week’s paper. I’ve
received hundreds of responses and will compile and write about it next
week. If you haven’t sent in your poll,
dig out last week’s paper and send it to my legislative address tim.goodwin@sdlegislature.gov
Last Thursday ranks up there as one of the saddest days of my life. What happened? Well, first my 13-year-old chocolate lab passed away. His name was Charlie Brown, and we called him “Chuck.” He was the most loyal friend a man could get. Chuck, I will never forget the great hunts we had, and daily companionship we shared. I will remember you forever.
On an even sadder note, Representative Sean McPherson also passed away. Sean gave it his all fighting cancer, but in the end, it took his life. He was only 47 years old. Sean and I were elected in 2016; he out of district 32, which is located inside the city limits of Rapid City. We both thought it was really cool that we were on the same ballot last election as Donald Trump!
Sean and I enjoyed the usual veteran bantering. He was a submariner in the Navy, and I was a paratrooper in the Army, so we were always teasing each other. It seemed like when we visited every day during session, we’d end our conversation giving each other a bad time about our branch of service. He usually got the last word in, like I’d be walking away and he would yell, “Hey Tim!” and I’d turn and look, and with a big smile on his face, he’d yell so everyone could hear, “Beat Army!” This, of course, was in reference to the annual Collegiate Military Academy game of Army vs Navy.
Sean was Senior Pastor at Real Life Church, located on Sheridan Lake Road. He also taught high school Bible classes at Rapid City Christian School. Friends of Sean have set up a GO FUND ME page to hopefully raise enough money to pay off his house mortgage.
He is survived by his wife Kristine, four children, and one grandchild. Visitation will be Thursday, May 3, at 5pm with a 7pm sharing at Real Life Church of the Nazarene, 4024 Sheridan Lake Road in Rapid City. Funeral service will be Friday, May 4, at 10:30 am at Rapid City Christian School, 23757 Arena Dr., near Hart Ranch.
Until next week,
Tim R. Goodwin, Representative for District 30
