Happy 4th of July!
From the Desk of Tim R. Goodwin
Greetings! Hope you all have a spectacular and safe 4th
of July!! I truly believe we live in the
most patriotic district in our state, and probably our nation. Those who would like to debate us are going
to have to compete with Mount Rushmore for starters and we could end the debate
with the beauty and tranquility of the badlands to the national forest. Yes, from Custer State Park to pristine
streams and lakes. Just the crisp
mountain air that goes all the way to the bottom of our lungs is enough to
break out and sing “O Beautiful for spacious skies…”
District 30 politics 101. As most are aware, the state had a primary election on June 5th. A quick civics class: South Dakota has 66 counties, broken down into 35 legislative districts. Each district has about 24K people in it. So, in Rapid City, a district could be 2 miles by 3 miles to encompass 24K people. In district 30 it’s the Pennington County line 14 miles east of Wall to the Wyoming border, plus Custer and Fall River counties; an area 110 miles by 80 miles, approximately.
Each district has 2 representatives that serve in the state House of Representatives for a total of 70 in the House. Each district has one senator who serves in the state Senate for a total of 35 in the Senate. That means that there are 105 citizen legislators that represent the approximately 800,000 residents of South Dakota.
Our next election is on November 5th. It is called our General Election, which means winners then go on to serve their term of service for whatever office they were seeking. In our district 30, the rundown looks like this. Republicans Julie Frye-Mueller and I (Tim R. Goodwin) are incumbents running for re-election for the House of Representatives. Democrats Whitney Rave and H enry Whitney are challenging us for a seat in the state House. In the Senate, we have Democrat Kristine Winter, Libertarian Gidean Oakes and our Republican Senate candidate is yet to be determined.
Senator Lance Russell won the primary over Bruce Rampelberg and Patricia Sherry. However, Sen. Russell was forced to resign his Senate seat so that he could run for the Attorney General position.
To be continued next week….
Tim R. Goodwin, Representative District 30
