Happy New Year!
A few important dates as we head into 2021
Happy New Year!
Greetings! As we close out 2020, I thought I’d bring up some important dates. Personally, this is my favorite time of the year. Why? Because it is lion hunting season in the Hills. The season in the Black Hills forest district lasts from Dec. 26, 2020 through April 30, 2021. The season could end earlier than that if our quota is hit. The quota is 60 lions harvested or 40 females, whichever comes first. You can pull up the GF&P website and see the lion count as the season wears on. You do have 24 hours to have your harvested lion checked in with Game, Fish and & Parks.
A lot of South Dakota citizens don’t understand how to get a lion tag. It is the easiest big game tag there is. If you’re a South Dakota resident, you go online, pay $28 and you get a lion license. Each year GF&P sets the number of lions needing to be harvested for a healthy ecosystem in the Black Hills. Once their quota is hit, the season is over.
I see no reason we couldn’t use this same method for other big game licenses. Start off with Archery Elk. GF&P already sets how many elk they want harvested in each unit. Once you harvest an elk, you need to get it checked in at various locations throughout the Hills. Why not do like lion season for Archery Elk? Every South Dakota citizen who applies for an Archery Elk tag gets a tag. When the quota is hit, the season is over. What a boon to our Black Hills economy would be realized if this proposal became reality!
Other important dates. January 5th, 2021. This is the run-off election for Georgia’s 2 senate seats. Right now, out of the 100 U. S. Senators, 50 are Republican and 48 are Democrat or Independent. If both Georgia seats would go Democrat, that would make our U.S. Senate 50 Republicans and 50 Democrat or Independent. In this case, if a vote came out 50-50, which might happen, the Vice President breaks the tie. With Kamala Harris the next VP, she would vote with the Democrats, thus giving them the majority in the Senate.
Democrats already have a majority in our U.S. House of Representatives, and with our next president, Joe Biden, being a Democrat, that party would control the House, the Senate, and the Executive Branch, meaning the Presidency. So, you can see why January 5 is a very important date for our country.
The next important date is January 6, 2021. That’s when the Electoral College meets and casts their votes for President. Remember, 270 votes are needed to be elected and it appears Joe Biden has more than 270 votes and will become our 46th President of the United States.
January 20th is another important date, as that’s when the inauguration is held, swearing in our new President and Vice President.
Switching from the national level to our state government, we start the 96th Legislative Session on January 12, 2021. The Session runs through March 11 with Veto Day being 29 March 2021. Here’s a breakdown of the majority numbers in our House and Senate. The Senate has 32 Republicans and 3 Democrats. The House has 62 Republicans and 8 Democrats. Our Governor is Republican, so yes, we are definitely a Republican state.
In closing, I’d just like the South Dakota citizens to know that our politics in Pierre are much different than what you see on the national level in Washington, D.C. Even though we Republicans have a super majority, we work with the Democrat legislators, and in my case, have become good friends. I think we need less politics and more rolling up our sleeves and passing legislation that’s good for the great citizenry of our state, regardless of political party.
To the citizens of South Dakota and to the men and women in uniform, in honor of all who served, in respectful memory of all who fell, and in great appreciation to those who serve today, Thank You, for giving me the opportunity to represent you.
