Week 1 is in the books!!
Whew! Week one in the books. Nine more to go. The week started off with Governor Noem’s State of the State address to the House of Representatives and the Senate. Our chamber, having 70 members, is so much bigger than the senate chamber of 35 that when there is a joint address, the senators come over and join us.
In the governor’s address, there were a few surprises. I liked them. They’re really good. Drum roll ready?
First, habitat , such as wild land, rushes, tree belts, food plots, tall grass, that kind of habitat. Governor Noem wants to put SD back on the map for our state bird, the pheasant. Of course, increasing habitat acres helps all wildlife – deer, ducks, geese, antelope, quail, grouse, and the list goes on.
Next surprise – this one is equally as good – I know the suspense is killing you. Predators like skunks, racoons, civet cats, opossums, fox, coyotes. Gov. Noem has directed Game, Fish, and Parks to come up with a bounty system to enhance especially young people in getting involved in harvesting these predators. In a lot of cases, a predator like a racoon (which I think does the most damage), not only eats the pheasants’ eggs, but also will kill the hen. Coyotes probably don’t need a bounty, as their pelts are worth around $75 this winter. Being an avid hunter, I had to pinch myself hearing first hand her habitat and predator initiatives. Seriously, this governor is going to be alright!
Also addressed were our out-of-control drug epidemics, meaning opioids, but really wanting to crack down on the family-destroying meth usage.
Broadband use, or getting broadband to all parts of SD, is another goal of hers. In our district, we have a lot of places that Internet is patchy and slow, or nonexistent. She wants everyone to have highspeed internet usage. Bravo!
Gov. Noem also committed to a strong, diverse economy with a pro-business approach. She’ll concentrate on value-added agriculture, bring industry to our state, getting a handle on out-of-control healthcare expenses, all of which will enhance our quality of life.
I enjoyed Gov. Noem’s fresh look at our issues and her ambitious, optimistic attitude. This 94th session could be one of the best!!
To the citizens of District 30 and to the men and women in uniform, in honor of all who served, in respectful memory of all who fell, and in great appreciation to those who serve today, Thank You, for giving me the opportunity to serve you.
