Are You Ready for Good News?
Week 3
Are you ready for a good, I mean great news story? Well, here it is:
Master Sergeant Arlyn Reinert, U.S. Air Force Retired, and now deceased, has, in his will, left $1.2 million to the Michael J. Fitzmaurice State Veterans’ Home, located in beautiful Hot Springs, SD!! Yep, that’s 1,200,000.00 dollars. In his will, Master Sergeant Reinert requested his money be used to enrich the lives of the men and women of the facility in Hot Springs. He named U.S. Army Colonel Retired Brad Richardson, Superintendent of the Veterans home as the executor of the estate.
Unbelievable but true! Boy, I’m going to have to stop teasing Air Force veterans. Then again, it’s just interservice rivalry. Trust me, the other military branches can hold their own on the bantering, like “why would anyone jump out of a perfectly good airplane?”
In Governor Kristi Noem’s budget address last week, she has in her budget a request to the legislature that $100,000 be spent for needs at the Veterans home yet this year. Master Sergeant Reinert apparently passed recently while being a resident of a nursing home in Perryton, Texas. There doesn’t seem to be a connection between our state Veterans Home and Master Sergeant Reinert. Here’s my hunch: before passing, Master Sergeant Reinert did his research on the internet of all the veteran facilities nationwide. Once he pulled up the Michael Fitzgerald State Veterans Home, named after a South Dakota resident who received the Medal of Honor serving in the 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam, and saw how outstanding our state home is, he decided that this was his best choice to help veterans.
What an honor to our state home. If you haven’t visited the facility, please contact Superintendent Brad Richardson and he or his staff will give you the tour and will even invite you to stay for dinner. The place is truly spectacular!
We finished week 3 in the legislature and things are starting to heat up. We’ve all been busy drafting legislation going to our committee hearings, and now we are just starting to vote on the bills that passed through committees.
I dropped House Bill 1110 (HB1110) on Thursday, co-sponsored by Senator Lance Russell. This bill puts a penalty on the responsible parties that don’t report births and deaths. There is a law regarding that all births and deaths in South Dakota are to be reported, but there isn’t any type of penalty if they are not reported. This bill would make it a Class 2 misdemeanor with up to 30 days in jail and a $500 fine. Now you may be scratching your head and thinking, “Who in the world would fall into this category of no birth or death certificate?” We have a Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FLDS) cult living in a compound in Custer county. Since it’s inception in 2005, this cult has not reported any births or deaths. This is serious business. Many have written about the reasons they don’t report births and deaths.
Thanks for taking the Civics portion of the U.S. Citizenship Test last week. The answers are: 1.a, 2.c, 3.c, 4.d, 5.c, 6.a, 7.c, 8.a, 9.c, 10.a, 11.d, 12.a, 13.b, 14.b, 15.a, 16.b, 17.a, 18.b, 19.c, 20.d, 21.b, 22.b, 23.a, 24.d.
To the citizens of District 30 and to the men and women in uniform, in honor of all who served, in respectful memory of all who fell, and in great appreciation to those who serve today, Thank You, for giving me the opportunity to serve you.
Tim R. Goodwin, District 30 Representative
