Early Voting
Starts Friday, April 17th!
Greetings again! Happy early voting! Yep, early voting starts this Friday, April 17. Now, to vote early, you go to your respective courthouse in District 30. Those courthouses are in Hot Springs (Fall River County), Custer (Custer County) and Rapid City (Pennington County). This election is called the Primary Election. This means each party has a runoff of their party’s candidates who are running for office in the General Election on November 3rd. It’s like the semifinals before the big game.
If you are a registered democrat or independent, you vote only for the democrat or independent candidates this time. It isn’t confusing because those are the only candidates listed on your ballot. Likewise, if you are a registered republican, you will get a republican ballot listing that party’s candidates. You can look up all candidates on the Secretary of State’s website. Just type in “Secretary of State South Dakota” and it should pop up for you.
Now let’s talk Corona virus and this election cycle. Probably the preferred method of voting is by absentee ballot. Because of this virus, the Secretary of State’s office is sending out Absentee Ballot Request Forms to all registered voters; everyone who is registered as democrat, republican or independent. On that same website you can check your voter registration status and update any changes such as address updates or if you’d like to switch political parties. Once you receive you Absentee Ballot Request Form (application), according to Pennington County’s Auditor, “When you complete your absentee ballot application that must be notarized OR you need to mail in a copy of one of the acceptable forms of identification (that is on the application).”
Once you receive your absentee ballot, you just vote like you were in the booth on election day. No multiple choice or essay questions. You just simply check the box of the candidate(s) you wish to vote for. The directions will tell you if you can vote for one or more than one candidate.
After you’ve voted for the candidates of your choice, make a copy of your driver’s license front side only and mail that back with your ballot.
Your ballot has to be at your respective courthouse auditor’s office no later than 5pm the day before the Primary Election which is June 2nd. So, no later than June 1st, 5pm, county auditor’s office.
Your other option is to wait until June 2nd and vote at your normal voting location. With the crisis we are in, I recommend absentee ballot by mail.
So, to make this, hopefully, clearer than mud, let me summarize your options to vote in this year’s primary on June 2nd:
1.Early voting starting April 17, ending June 1st at your county courthouse. Bear in mind social distancing and out of respect for others and your own wellbeing, wear a mask.
2.Absentee ballot by mail. I think it’s the safest option.
3.Wait until Primary Election Day and vote in person on June 2nd.
Whew! Hope that clears it up for you. I don’t care what party affiliation you are, just please vote using one of these 3 options. Remember, thousands of our veterans have fought for all of us to have this precious right to decide our elected officials. Please exercise your right to vote. Thank you!
To the citizens of South Dakota and to the men and women in uniform, in honor of all who served, in respectful memory of all who fell, and in great appreciation to those who serve today, Thank You, for giving me the opportunity to represent you.
