Happy Early Voting!
Polls Open Next Friday, September 18
Greetings and Happy Early Voting!
Yep, I said Happy Early Voting, as the polls open next Friday, September 18. This election is called the General Election. All candidates who won their Primary Election on June 2, 2020 now go forward for the final election. Those winning the General Election get sworn into office in January 2021. The term they serve depends on the office, but is usually 2 years or 4 years. The U.S. Senate term and the Public Utilities Commission term are 6 years.
Now as I’ve said before, unless you’ve been handing out Bibles in the amazon rain forest or held captive against your will at the FLDS compound southwest of Pringle, you probably have heard that there is a Presidential Election this year. You know, President Trump and Vice President Pence vs Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, deciding who will be our next President and Vice President.
Presidential Elections usually generate better voter turnout. Here’s my suggestion in this Covid-19 era we’re forced to live in (Thanks but no thanks communist China). Vote early! Yes! Starting September 18 and going through November 2, you can vote early at your county courthouse in the Auditor’s Office. District 30, your voting locations are:
Fall River County is at the county courthouse in Hot Springs.
Custer County is at the county courthouse in Custer.
Pennington County is in Rapid City at the county’s new facility located east of the county courthouse. It’s the building where you pay your property taxes and get your license plates.
Take a mask with you in case it is required to be worn during voting.
Next week I will go into detail on the 3 ballot measures that are on your voting ballot. Here’s a brief rundown on the 3 items:
Constitutional Amendment A – to legalize, regulate and tax marijuana and to require the legislature to pass laws regulating hemp as well as laws ensuring access to marijuana for medical use.
Amendment B – An amendment to the South Dakota Constitution authorizing to allow sports wagering in Deadwood.
Initiated Measure 26 – An initiated measure on legalizing marijuana for medical use.
The good news is there are only 3 ballot measures you vote on before checking the boxes on the candidates, i.e. President and so on.
Our Secretary of State, Steve Barnett, and his staff do a heck of a job administering our elections, as do our county auditors and their teams. We are lucky to live in a country where we are free to vote for whomever we choose. You can look up and read in detail about these ballot items, and see a sample ballot at www.sdsos.gov. Print and take the sample ballot with you into the voting booth. I guess you would call this an open book test; no memorizing required.
Remember, next week I’ll attempt to go over these 3 ballot measures. I’ll try to use layman’s terms and will let you know how I’m voting and why. How you vote is totally up to you. Just please, please vote. Of course, there is the option of voting by mail again and you can always vote on Election Day, November 3rd.
Before I close, remember the Star Academy auction is September 16 at 11am (God’s time) MST at Custer County Courthouse. Until next week, stay safe.
To the citizens of South Dakota and to the men and women in uniform, in honor of all who served, in respectful memory of all who fell, and in great appreciation to those who serve today, Thank You, for giving me the opportunity to represent you.
