Constitution Amendment W
Early Voting Has Begun!!
Greetings
again! Happy early voting! Yep, early voting started September 21 for
the general election on November 6, 2018.
Early voting is available at your respective county courthouse until November
6. Because of early voting, I thought
I’d write about constitution amendment W, or in the phonetic alphabet,
amendment Whiskey.
If you’re on the way to vote and don’t have time to read this, I recommend to vote “no” on Whiskey “W”. For the rest that have time to read, here are the reasons for a no vote.
One, it’s a constitutional amendment, and we shouldn’t take lightly anything to change our state constitution. If passed, “W” (Whiskey) gives unchecked power to a 7 member tribunal (I’d rather call it a committee).
How are these 7 members selected? First, 4 members are selected. The SD Supreme Court Justices pick 2 of the four. The Speaker of the House and the Minority Leader each send 3 names to the Governor, and he picks one of the 3 from each group.
The next 3 members are chosen by the first 4 members. (?!) Seriously, I’m not making this up. Also, if a member has a conflict of interest, they must recuse themselves from voting, unless their vote is needed to resolve an issue, meaning breaking a tie vote.
Also, - this proposal creates a new Article in the SD Constitution and declares the article superior to ALL other sections of the constitution.
-As mention, voters don’t choose this tribunal (I still like the word committee.) to oversee things such as ethics, conflicts of interest and government contracts.
-The committee would be given unchecked power to pass rules placing under burdens on teachers, state employees and small businesses.
-If W passes, it would be in the state constitution and would require another statewide election to fix it.
-It looks like to me another one of those “let’s pass to see what’s in it” proposals. Not a good way to even think about changing our state constitution.
This Representative urges a NO vote on Constitution Amendment Whiskey “W”.
