Elections are Less Than a Month Away!
From the Desk of Tim R. Goodwin
Greetings
again! Elections are less than a month
out. As I mentioned earlier, you can
vote early through the day before the election on Nov. 6th. Early voting is taking place Monday through
Friday at all 3 courthouses in Fall River, Custer and Pennington counties. All you need to vote is your driver’s license
to prove who you are, and of course, be a registered voter.
I just realized that I hadn’t given my recommendations on Constitutional Amendment Z, or Initiated Measure 24 (IM-24). (Thanks Richard!)
IM-24 is an initiated measure prohibiting contributions to ballot question committees by non-residents, out-of-state political committees, and entities that are not on file with the Secretary of State. It sounds good on the surface, but I’m concerned about any type of censoring. Also, I’ve read briefs stating that it could be unconstitutional. My belief is that if an out-of-state company like let’s say the railroad wants to push some issue, they should have the right to do so. If we as voters don’t agree, we can tell them that at the ballot box and vote no. So “NO” is my recommendation on IM-24.
The last ballot item is Constitutional Amendment Z. This is an amendment to the SD Constitution establishing that a proposed constitutional amendment may embrace only one subject, and requiring proposed amendments to be presented and voted upon separately. Z should make the ballot more understandable and would prohibit multiple amendments to be listed together. So in my view, simpler is better for all to understand, so I recommend a “YES” vote on Z.
Here’s a cheat sheet that you can take with you to the ballot box:
Amendment W – no
Amendment X – yes
Amendment Z – yes
IM-24 – no
IM-25 – no
If you will, Whiskey is a “NO”, X-rays and zebras are a “YES”. I’m no longer 24 or 25, so the answer is “no” and “no”! Pretty corny, but it’s better than that helpless feeling you get when you’re trying to understand the legalese of the measures and your mind goes blank. Next you feel pressured, as voters are waiting in line, etc. So, “no” Whiskey, “yes, yes” to x-rays and zebras, and I’m not 24 or 25, so “no, no”. Cracks me up!
Last item is for high school juniors or seniors who would like to be pages in either chamber, the House or the Senate. You can look up details at sdlegislature.gov students/page program. The session is 2019, January 9th through March 9th, and pages come for a two-week period.
Until next time…
Tim R. Goodwin, Representative, District 30
