The 2021 Legislative Session ...
is almost upon us!!
The 2021 Legislative Session is almost upon us. We in the Republican caucus have elected leadership positions, have our committee assignments, and know our floor seating chart. Let’s start with the floor seating chart. I’m sitting in the back row again with the other 4 Whips, along with the Assistant Leader and Leader. Next to me in the back row are the Democrat Assistant Leader and Leader. Both are great legislators and I really enjoy their company. Representative Trish Ladner, our other legislator from District 30, (who is going to be really good!), sits in my column, but all the way up front in the second row. The back row is Row 8.
The only reason that it might mean anything to you is that if you come visit us in the capitol during session, you can sit up in the gallery and spot us better. You’re also welcome on the floor in the morning, usually until 11 am. Then the Sergeant at Arms asks you politely to get off the floor. This is done to give us a little time at our desks to get ready for the day. Of course, if you need to visit with either of us, just crack the very back door open and ask for Trish or myself and we can step out to visit. All legislators love having citizens come to the capitol and visit. We will even introduce you during session and give you a standing ovation! Where else can you go to get one of those?
Next, committee assignments. Rep. Ladner and I both are on Agriculture and Natural Resources. This we are both excited about, as we have a diverse district (80 deep x 100 miles wide), so this is an excellent committee where we can best represent our district. Also, Agriculture includes Game, Fish and Parks and that is right down my alley as well.
Rep. Ladner is on Commerce and Energy, another great assignment for our district. I’m on State Affairs, which I’ve served on the last two years and love. Also, I got lucky to be on the Military and Veteran Affairs Committee. This I felt a need to be on because we are THE veterans’ district! Also noteworthy is the B21 Bomber transitioning to Ellsworth Air Force Base, so it will be cool to be on the forefront of that exciting endeavor.
Last, as mentioned last week, I was re-elected to hold one of the five Whip positions. This is another assignment I enjoy. Each Whip group has 12 members and we kind of feed off each other and support each other not only during session, but throughout the year. I “bribe” my Whip group with Butterfinger candy bars at each meeting as an extra incentive to show up. Needless to say, we have pretty much perfect attendance. LOL.
Next, on Rep. Ladner’s and my agenda is that we are heading over to Pierre to hear Gov. Noem’s budget address on Dec. 8, and then after that things start happening pretty fast.
To the citizens of South Dakota and to the men and women in uniform, in honor of all who served, in respectful memory of all who fell, and in great appreciation to those who serve today, Thank You, for giving me the opportunity to represent you.
Tim R. Goodwin, District 30 Representative
