The Greatest Independence Day Celebration!
Right Here in South Dakota!!
Greetings! Holy cow was that the greatest Independence Day celebration ever, and it was right here in South Dakota, more specifically, the grand jewel of our state, the Black Hills! Marcia and I had the distinct privilege of receiving tickets to Mount Rushmore. Our experience was that we felt it was a once in a lifetime event. Well, I guess a couple of lifetimes as this was the first time a president came to celebrate Independence Day at Mount Rushmore since statehood in 1889.
After picking up our tickets in Keystone, we went back home to rest a bit, as we were anticipating a long evening. We were advised that we needed to be at Mount Rushmore before 4pm, as they were closing the road for security reasons after that. We left home around 2:30pm and went via the Hill City route to the mountain. Everything went like clockwork, as we were in our parking spot by 3pm.
Everyone we came into contact with, such as the Highway Patrol, Forest Service Personnel, County Sheriff’s deputies, first responders and medical personnel were all very professional, courteous, and excited as we were. We all felt that this Independence Day was one for the ages, and it was!
Once at our seating area, it was great fun socializing with a lot of local friends, as well as several legislators from all parts of our state. Marcia attends legislative session with me each year, so it was fun watching her interacting with our old friends. Inside the plaza theatre, it was plenty warm. I’m sure we all got our daily recommended vitamin D for the day! LOL. Actually, the wait for the programs to start was very pleasant. The Air Force Academy Band out of Colorado and our own 147th Army Band of the South Dakota National Guard were there and just did a bang-up job.
Also, there were other entertainers. The most impressive was the 2x world champion hoop dancer. She said she beat all comers, male and female at the world championships, and she did it in a dress! It had to be unbearably hot onstage doing all that movement, but she did it with dignity and grace.
Finally, after the sun went behind the mountain, our program began. It started with Mary Hart, a former Miss South Dakota, who was Master of Ceremonies. Next, Governor Noem spoke. I always enjoy her delivery. It is so down-home and pleasant. It’s like she’s just visiting with you. No nervousness; just her way of communicating. Now that’s a real gift.
Next was what we were all waiting for, our (yours and my) president of these great United States of America, President Donald J. Trump’s address. I will do it injustice to try to summarize here. Please, please find his speech and at least read it. For those who watched it live on tv, read the speech and listen to it again. It was in my opinion his greatest speech to date. And it was given when our country is in crisis, not the same magnitude as during President Lincoln’s Gettysburg address during the Civil Was, but a national crisis just the same.
To the citizens of South Dakota and to the men and women in uniform, in honor of all who served, in respectful memory of all who fell, and in great appreciation to those who serve today, Thank you, for giving me the opportunity to represent you.
Tim R. Goodwin, district 30 Representative
