The Last Week of the 96th Legislative Session!
A Successful Session In Spite of COVID 19
Greetings! It’s the last week of the 96th Legislative Session! I’m very proud of the fact that we had our session in spite of the COVID pandemic. We in the legislature and the governor, in the executive branch, figured out how we could have session instead of how we couldn’t. I read we are the only state in the union that didn’t alter our calendar with delays and breaks or cancellations.
We did have legislators come down with the virus. We just allowed them to participate remotely both for committee meetings and for floor votes. Starting this week, (the last one; did I mention that?), we have, to my knowledge, everyone back in person. My wife, M3, and I had COVID before Christmas, so had enough antibodies to get through Session without any problems. I signed up for the vaccine this week. It is the Johnson and Johnson one that requires only one injection.
Change of subject. I’m more than a little irritated with headlines such as in the March 5, 2021 Rapid City Journal, that read, “Noem’s Family Gets 600K in COVID Grants.” Now wait just a second. To my knowledge her family, the Noem’s, didn’t receive any COVID relief dollars nor did they put in for any. The ranch referred to in the article, the Arnold family ranch, Racota Valley, is a partnership. The partners are her brothers. Of course, headlines wouldn’t be quite so flashy if it read, “Arnold family gets 600K in COVID money.”
This title is a cheap shot at OUR governor and all South Dakota citizens should take exception to this. How dare the Rapid City Journal try to slander Governor Noem? This lady has led our state through the toughest time ever with this COVID crisis. We are the only state that stayed open, and the only state that flourished during this pandemic. Now these headlines are on the front page.
Before you say that this Goodwin guy is drunk with love and admiration for Governor Noem, and that this makes me not look at things objectively, hear this. For those who know me well, I was one of Marty Jackley’s Team Captains when he ran for governor in the Republican Primary, and yes, it was against (at that time) Congresswoman Noem. After the Primary which Kristi won, myself and all the Jackley contingent went all in to get her elected to Governor. We have supported her ever since being elected. It is the thing to do. She is our Governor. Now, that doesn’t mean we agree on everything, but by and large we all believe in conservative Republican principles.
So, Rapid City Journal, get off the headlines that are misleading about our Governor. We the people are not going to stand for it. Enough is enough. Our state motto, “Under God the people rule,” is embedded in all of us South Dakotans and we are fed up with trashing our Governor!
To the citizens of South Dakota and to the men and women in uniform, in honor of all who served, in respectful memory of all who fell, and in great appreciation to those who serve today, Thank You, for giving me the opportunity to represent you.
Tim R. Goodwin, District 30 Representative
