America's Game!
AMERICA’S GAME
Yep, the biggest game in college football is this weekend. Can’t be? Yes, it is. The Army Blacknights vs the Navy Midshipmen. When? This Saturday, December 8th, on CBS at 1pm Mountain Standard Time.
This rivalry started in 1890, a year after South Dakota became a state! Navy leads the rivalry 60-50-7. That’s 119 games. There were some games not played during WWI and WWII. Navy had a 14 game winning streak from 2002-2015. Army has won the last two years. Last year’s game was one of the best ever, with Army coming out on top 14-13.
There are four top reasons to watch this game, even if you don’t like football. Reason #4: Singing second. When you earn the right to sing 2nd, that means you won the game. When the final whistle sounds game over, both teams head over to the losing team’s band and sing the losing team’s alma mater first. Next they head over to the winning team’s band and sing the winning team’s school song. Pretty cool!
Reason #3: Pure football. Maybe neither team is ranked nationally, (although Army is ranked 23rd with a 9-2 record). It’s pure college football play, all for the love of the game. It’s purity of competition in its truest form. This game is their season; it’s 60 minutes of intensity unlike anything you will see all year.
Reason #2: The student sections. Every student attends in uniform; over 800 cadets and midshipmen arriving hours before the game starts. If the president of the United States doesn’t attend, and he does often, there will be cardboard cutouts of the president in the stands. You’ve seen student sections before, but nothing quite like this.
Reason #1: T he national anthem. Both student choirs come together and absolutely knock the national anthem out of the park!
No matter who wins the game, it’s a great reminder of just how incredible it is to be an American. I recommend highly tuning into the city of brotherly love this Saturday, December 8th, 1pm MST on CBS and watching “America’s Game!” Go Army! Beat Navy!
Thanks for letting me serve in District 30 as your representative.
