Buffalo Round-up 2020
A bigger melting pot of citizens from all around the United States than ever before!
Buffalo Roundup 2020, the annual Custer State Park event was this past Thursday through Saturday, September 24-26. I worked in the two Grand Old Party (GOP) booths sponsored by Pennington and Custer County Republicans. Boy, was that an inspiring event! First off, this year’s Roundup was probably a bigger melting pot of citizens from all around the United States than ever before.
Why? Because South Dakota was one of the few states that didn’t go into panic and lock down the state. Instead, we chose personal freedom during this pandemic. The credit here goes to our governor, as it should, but a little known fact is that SB191, which was heading to locking down the state, was blocked by the House of Representatives. This was on Veto Day March 30 this past session. Senate Bill 191 was already passed by out state Senate and was well on its way to getting a 2/3rds vote which would make it go into effect immediately in the wee hours of the night. Twenty-nine representatives in the House took a stand and voted against SB191, thus not giving the 2/3rds needed. Now I’m not taking anything away from our governor here, but like Paul Harvey used to say, “the rest of the story.” Now the rest is history as they say!
Governor Noem has been a champion on personal freedoms and has gained national recognition like no other governor in the United States, and rightfully so. This is what I’m going to try to convey to you: While working our Republican booths, hundreds and hundreds of people from all over the United States came up to us and said something like this: We sure wish we had your Governor Kristi Noem in our state. The reason we traveled all this way to the Buffalo Roundup was because your governor kept South Dakota free. They went on to say that they wanted to move here with several, again in the hundreds, saying they were in fact moving here and even asked if we knew a good realtor. You had to be there to experience the passion in their voices. It was truly amazing and made all of us manning the booth very proud to be South Dakotans and also very proud of our courageous governor.
In closing, here are the latest Covid 19 survival rates as per the Center for Disease Control (CDC):
Age 0-19 99.97%
20-49 99.98%
50-69 99.5%
70&over 94.6%
To the citizens of South Dakota and to the men and women in uniform, in honor of all who served, in respectful memory of all who fell, and in great appreciation to those who serve today, Thank You, for giving me the opportunity to represent you.
Tim R. Goodwin, District 30 Representative
