District 30 House Race ...
We’re Having a Recount!
Greetings! I know a while ago I promised no more voter primary talk until the General Election on Nov. 3rd, 2020. Well, I have to recant on my bold statement because we have a recount. Yep, in District 30 House race, we’re having a recount.
So, how does that work? Great question! It works like this:
If a voter may select two candidates for the same office, the total votes cast for ALL candidates shall be 2x the average number of votes cast for the candidates officially declared, nominated, or elected. Let’s go back to the 5th grade and do a story problem as it relates to the District 30 House race.
·A voter can select two candidates because there are two House seats up for election.
oCandidate 1 – Goodwin received 3488 votes
oCandidate 2 – Ladner received 1438 votes
oCandidate 3 – Thompson received 1375 votes
oCandidate 4 – Neff received 1358 votes
·Total the votes cast for the candidates. 3488+1438+1375+1358=7659
Find the average. 7659/4=1914.75, or 1915
·Take 4 times the average vote cast. 1915*4=7660
·This vote margin must not exceed 2%. 7660x2%=153.2, or 153
·Thus, the election must be within 153, or fewer votes to request a recount.
Candidate 2 received 1438 votes minus candidate 3, who received 1375 votes, equals 63 votes difference. It is less than our fancy formula of 153, so candidate 3 has the right to request a recount, which she has done.
Because district 30 spans Fall River, Custer and the rural part of Pennington Counties, the recount will take place at each county’s respective courthouse. The date of the recount is June 22 and the start time is 9am. Each candidate should have an official observer at the 3 locations. Tentative plans are for me to be in Fall River County, Marcia in Custer County, and my campaign manager to be in Pennington County. You all are invited to attend.
To the citizens of South Dakota and to the men and women in uniform, in honor of all who served, in respectful memory of all who fell, and in great appreciation to those who serve today, Thank You, for giving me the opportunity to represent you.
Tim R. Goodwin, District 30 Representative
