The Primary is Over!
So what were the results?
Greetings! It’s finally over. What is finally over? The Primary Election! This was a difficult primary due to the Chinese Communist Virus. The Republican Party in each of the 3 counties did a great job helping candidates, and each even had a forum for all of the candidates to campaign in and speak at.
A special thank you goes out to Jeff Holbrook, chair of the Pennington County Republicans, Marilyn Oakes, chair of the Custer County Republicans, and Ken Updike, chair of the Fall River Republicans. The Democrat Party did not run any candidates in the Legislative races, so no forums or anything were needed.
One of the reasons only the Republicans had primaries is because district 30 is a predominately Republican district. The numbers look like this: Republicans=11,187; Democrats=3,089; Independents=2,864.
So, how did things turn out? Before I print actual results, a couple of comments. We had a 42% voter turn-out, either by absentee ballot, early voting, or actual voting in person on Election Day. As a state, South Dakota had 28% voter turn-out. For some reason Fall River County didn’t turn in any election results until after 2am on June 3rd. I finally went to bed around midnight, only to find different results in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place finishers when I got up around 5:30 am. Yea, short night. I can’t do that like I used to.
Another tidbit is that the Rapid City Journal put out partial results in their morning paper on June 3rd, and did not print the final results until June 6th. The reason I bring this up is because a lot of results changed from what the Rapid City Journal published on June 3rd. With that being said, below are the election results for Senate and House races in District 30. You can look up all results on the Secretary of State’s website at sdsos.gov.
For Senate
Julie Frye-Mueller 53% 2,477 votes
George Kotti 47% 2,197 votes
Representative Frye-Mueller has an opponent in Gideon Oakes in the General Election on November 3rd. The winner will be the senator for District 30.
For House of Representatives
Tim R Goodwin 46% 3,488 votes
Kwinn Neff 18% 1,358 votes
Trish Ladner 19% 1,438 votes
Florence Thompson 18% 1,375 votes
Trish Ladner and I will go forward unopposed in the General Election, and serve as your representatives for the 2021 and 2022 Legislative Sessions.
To the citizens of South Dakota and to the men and women in uniform, in honor of all who served, in respectful memory of all who fell, and in great appreciation to those who serve today, Thank you, for giving me the opportunity to represent you.
Tim R. Goodwin, District 30 Representative
