Great News!
Greetings! Great news! The state has expanded the dates for the small business and healthcare provider relief program. This is designed to give relief to small businesses and healthcare providers. Also, there are relief dollars for non-profits hit by what I call the “Chinese Communist Intentional Virus, or CCIV,” but to be polite, our government is calling it the covid-19 pandemic.
So, here’s the good news on what has changed:
*All grants are extended by a week to October 30, 2020.
*Minimum grant amount has been decreased from $750 to $500.
*Maximum grants have been increased from $100,000.00 to $500,000.00. Yep! You read that right. $100K to ½ million dollars!
*The eligibility requirement has been expanded from 25% to a reduction in business to 15% reduction.
*Same time frame, April through August 2019 and 2020. The loss is difference in lost revenue these 5 months; comparing those 5 months 2019 to 2020.
*Hotline is same number 605-937-7243, open 0800 hours to 1700 hours. Oops! I mean 8 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday East River Time (7am to 4pm God’s Time).
*Same email, covid.bizgrants@state.sd.us or covid.healthcaregrants.sd.us
*covid.sd.gov gives a thorough explanation of the small business and healthcare provider relief program.
Next subject: VOTING. You can vote now through November 2nd at your county auditor’s office excluding Saturday and Sunday this weekend. You can also vote on Election Day November 3rd. Polls open 7am-7pm (0700-1900 hours). I’ve mentioned before that Marcia and I are voting on Election Day. It’s been a family tradition to vote then. I enjoy the excitement of voting, going out to eat afterwards, then getting a nap in that afternoon if possible as its going to be a long night listening to results coming in.
The buzz is still out there regarding when we will find out the results of the Presidential Election. Remember, to win the Presidential Election, a candidate needs 270 electoral votes. Electoral votes are given to each state by how many U.S. congress persons they have plus 2 for senators each state has. So, in South Dakota we have one congressman, Dusty Johnson, and 2 senators, Mike Rounds and John Thune. That makes 3 electoral votes. In California they have 53 congressmen/women and 2 senators, so they have 55 electoral votes.
In all states except Nebraska and Maine, winner takes all the electoral votes. So, using California as an example, whichever candidate, President Trump or Former VP Biden, win the popular vote, they get all 55 electoral votes. In Nebraska and Maine, electoral votes are pro-rated out based on percent of popular vote. On election night, if either presidential candidate hits 270 electoral votes, that person is president.
Lastly, if some states play around and don’t get their popular votes counted, or hide behind mail-in ballots as an excuse not to tabulate and neither candidate hits 270 votes, the election of our next president goes to our U.S. House of Representatives. Here is the most important fact on the “House” voting for our next president. Ready? EACH STATE ONLY GETS ONE VOTE!! In this case we carry the same weight as the most populous state of California.
So, here’s your pre-election homework: Research and figure out how many states will go for Pres. Trump and how many will go to former Vice President Biden. Whichever candidate in this case gets 26 votes wins the election. Happy voting!
To the citizens of South Dakota and to the men and women in uniform, in honor of all who served, in respectful memory of all who fell, and in great appreciation to those who serve today, Thank You, for giving me the opportunity to represent you.
Tim R. Goodwin, District 30 Representative
