Special Session
Distribution of COVID Relief Money
Greetings! Before I get started, October 19th is the last day to register to vote.
We had our Special Session on Monday, October 5th. All went well, and we hashed out the remaining COVID relief money. This was a total group effort from the House of Representatives, the Senate and our executive branch which our Governor Kristi Noem heads up.
Speaking of Gov. Noem, her popularity and almost rock star status never ceases to amaze me. Just the other night, I was traveling and listening to the VP debate. Once that concluded, I was ready to change the station to some rock-n-roll to stay awake, and it was announced from Sean Hannity to stay tuned for a debate summary from Kristi Noem, the governor of South Dakota. Unbelievable! This national attention is an honor for our state and can only help all our citizens regardless of political party.
Getting back to the business at hand, at our Special Session we allocated the remaining 580 million of the 1.25 billion as follows:
400 million for small businesses
10 million for start-up businesses
15 million for hospitals acute care
40 million to small non-profits
115 million to community-based healthcare providers
I hope that totals 580 million.
So, here’s what happens next. Because Monday, October 12 is Native American Day, the applications will open at 8am East River time on October 13 and will continue through the close of business, 5pm East River time Friday, October 23rd. There is an information phone line in our state call center to answer any and all questions. The time of operation is 8am-5pm East River Time, or 7am-4pm God’s Time (West River time zone). The number is BR549. Whoops! Just teasing. That was Jr Samples’ number on Hee Haw. Boy, am I dating myself now! The actual number is 605-937-7243. You can also email to covid.bizgrants@state.sd.us or covidhealthcaregrants@state.sd.us
A couple of nuggets: you can look up and see if your business is in good standing at sdsos.gov and you’ll need to purchase a certificate there for $20. It talks about TINs (Tax Identification numbers) and EINs (Employer Identification numbers), which are the same numbers. You can also use the owner’s social security number if the other two numbers fail.
Here’s my advice to all us hardcore conservatives who think our U.S. Congress has gone off the tracks throwing all this money at the states: Apply anyway. If we don’t spend it, the unspent amount does not go towards bringing down our 26 trillion national debt. Other states would just receive our allocation, so please apply!
This pandemic is new ground for all of us and we just need to come together as citizens of our great state and get through this crisis.
Before closing, if you are having difficulties, please contact me at tim.goodwin@sdlegislature.gov or your new representative-elect Trish Ladner at trishforsd@gmail.com. Email is our preferred method of contact. Trish doesn’t officially get sworn in until January, but has jumped in with both feet, attending Special Session and getting herself educated on the relief dollars. Kudos to Trish!
To the citizens of South Dakota and to the men and women in uniform, in honor of all who served, in respectful memory of all who fell, and in great appreciation to those who serve today, Thank You, for giving me the opportunity to represent you.
Tim R. Goodwin, District 30 Representative
