Hold the phone! Stop what you’re doing and read this column! Have you heard of the Coronavirus Aid Relief and Economic Security Act (CARES Act)? Here’s what the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is doing: They are sending out debit cards in the mail. Yep! A neighbor called me over and sure as can be, they received a debit card in the mail. No place did it read “U.S. Government” or “IRS”. It came from Money Network Cardholder Services, P.O. Box 247022, Omaha, NE 68124-7022.
The letter stated, “Here is your Economic Impact Payment Card enabled by Money Network.” Then it gave an email address EIPcard.com and a toll-free number of 800-240-8100 to activate this debit card. Note that it is a debit card, not a credit card, and it did not come from your bank!? Is this confusing, or what?
So, with their permission, I called the number and went through the procedure to activate the debit card. Here is the shocking part to me: At the end of the call, it said that $1920.60 was on the card, and then referred them to a website where they could make cash withdrawals at ATM machines without getting charged a fee. Boy, this is confusing!
I wonder how many people got this debit card in the mail, thought it was another credit card offer and just threw it in the trash? Seriously, this is how our FEDERAL government is operating?! Marcia and I get credit card offers in the mail, I’d say, at least monthly, and we already have the credit card we like, so we shred them and throw them away.
My understanding is that stimulus payments also went out as direct deposits into taxpayers’ bank accounts that were used with their 2019 IRS returns. Also, I’ve heard of some citizens receiving checks. Now, writing this, it’s got me thinking; Marcia, have we received any mailings from Money Network Cardholder Services? Oh brother, I hope I didn’t “deep six” it if we did! This is crazy.
I’m not going to even get into who is going to get stuck with the bill for all of this free money being given out by our federal government. These people didn’t even get a reason for the $1920.60 debit card they received. Friends, this is irresponsible governing, and we all should write to Senators Thune and Rounds and Congressman Dustin Johnson and tell them that!
To the citizens of South Dakota and to the men and women in uniform, in honor of all who served, in respectful memory of all who fell, and in great appreciation to those who serve today, Thank you, for giving me the opportunity to represent you.
