Merry Christmas and Happy New Year ...
from our house to yours.
Marcia and I hope you have a blessed Christmas with the celebration of the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
There’s going to be a new governor in our state and a new first gentleman. In fact, both will be first in our state’s history; our very first female governor, Kristi Noem, and our very first first gentleman, Bryon Noem. Let the festivities begin. From 11 am Central Standard Time, (or as we know it, east river time) January 5th, 2019 through well-past midnight, the capitol of our great state will be filled with what we call in the military much pomp and circumstance. We will have two Oath of Office ceremonies and two Inaugural Balls, the Capitol Ball and the Inaugural Ball.
Why two swearing-in ceremonies you ask? Well, at 11am we legislators get sworn in, both in our respective chambers, the House and the Senate. Then at noon in the capitol rotunda, the newly elected constitutional officers take their oaths of office. This, of course, includes the new Governor Kristi Noem and new Lieutenant Governor Larry Rhoden.
Following this ceremony, a receiving line on the capitol’s first floor will be open for the public to greet, as I think I mentioned, the state’s first female governor, her husband, the first gentleman, as well as all the other officials. This receiving line is scheduled to go until 3:30 pm east river time.
Next on the agenda are the two balls. Each of these require separate tickets priced at $25 per person per ball. Yep, that’s $100 for Marcia and I to attend both balls. What the heck, it’s cheaper than our hotel room!
The dress code for each is formal attire. The Capitol Ball, the more prestigious one because it’s in the rotunda of the Capitol, starts at 6:30 pm with a grand march down the central stairs by recently sworn in officials and the Supreme Court justices. The first few dances are reserved for these people. Grand marches include the inaugural chairs, mayor of Pierre Steve Harding (an old Army buddy), constitutional officials and spouses, Supreme Court justices and spouses, Lieutenant Governor Larry Rhoden and his wife Sandy, and members of the first family, Governor Noem and her husband Bryon.
The second ball, called the Inaugural Ball, begins at 8 pm at the Ramkota Convention Center. There’s a second grand march starting at 9 pm. As a special treat, the music here is provided by our own National Guard, more specifically, the 147th Army Band. This is expected to go until 1 am, or until the 6th of January! (Then, of course, you can head to the Silver Spur in Fort Pierre, pick up an hour, but I digress…).
Tickets for both the Capitol Ball and the Inaugural Ball are online at pierretickets.com or by calling 1-800-962-2034. Marcia and I hope to see you there!
To the women and men in uniform, in honor of all who served, in respectful memory of all who fell, and in great appreciation to those who serve today, thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve you.
