So How is the Election Going?
Greetings again! So, how is the election going? I am asking because, like you, I am not sure. This Covid-19 communist Chinese virus sure changes how elections are conducted. Let’s review how we can vote in the upcoming Primary on June 2nd.
Of course, you can vote on June 2nd at your ordinary voting location.
Early voting: At the county courthouse, at the Auditor’s Office. I see Fall River County has a mobile tent set up to handle early voting. That has been going on since April 17th and will continue through June 1st. I guess Pennington and Custer Counties would like you to call ahead and make an appointment to vote. (Seriously?) Oh well, with this pandemic, we can’t be too cautious. The phone number for Custer County’s Auditor is 605-673-8173 and for Pennington, it is 605-394-2153. Fall River is 605-745-5145.
Absentee voting: This is what the Secretary of State and County Auditors are recommending. You should have received an application in the mail for an absentee ballot. You just fill out the application for an absentee ballot and mail it back to the County Auditor’s office. A self-addressed, stamped envelope is/was provided. Oh, also you needed to send a photocopy of your driver’s license. In about one week, you receive your actual absentee ballot in the mail. Simply follow the directions and vote from home.
They will provide a self-addressed big envelope to return your ballot in. (Don’t forget to send in a photocopy of your driver’s license!) However, this big envelope you put your ballot in is not postage prepaid. You have to pay the postage yourself. The cost is $1.00, yep, 100 pennies. So, two regular postage stamps will do the trick. I haven’t found out what happens if a voter mails it with no postage. This could happen, as they didn’t need postage to get their ballot. Also, what happens if a voter puts one regular, or forever stamp on, meaning postage would be $.50 short? My question is, “what happens to the ballot then?” I’m not trying to be difficult, but am wary anytime something smells or looks like possible voter suppression. My opinion is that if the application for the ballot was postpaid, why not have the actual returned ballot paid for also? If anyone can answer this, shoot me an email. Please!
Now for an alibi. Do I get one? You know how, if you’re at the rifle range, after “cease fire” is announced, the range official asks if there are any alibies (meaning someone still has rounds to expend)? Well, I need an alibi for last week’s article. I listed the wrong bill for “authorization to allow courthouse employees to carry a pistol into the courthouse.” I listed SB51, but that was changed to SB169 “Authorize the possession of a concealed pistol by employees in county courthouses” passed the House 56-11 and Senate 28-7 and was signed into law by Gov. Noem. Kudos to Commissioner Paul Nabholz and his crew for testifying and for all efforts by Sen. Russel getting this through the Senate. Rep. Frye-Mueller and I voted for this bill, SB169.
That’s about it for now! Remember to vote!
To the citizens of South Dakota and to the men and women in uniform, in honor of all who served, in respectful memory of all who fell, and in great appreciation to those who serve today, Thank You, for giving me the opportunity to represent you.
Tim R. Goodwin, District 30 Representative
