Upcoming Event!
Let's Talk About Something Fun ...
Greetings! Let’s talk about something fun; an upcoming event that doesn’t have “cancelled” after it’s announcement. Here it is: Custer County Republicans are hosting a “Meet The Candidates” event this Saturday, May 16th at 4pm. Now here’s the unique part. Ready? It’s at Roy’s Drive In Theater in Hermosa, SD. Yep, Hermosa is in Custer County. I often wonder how many folks go to the city of Custer for the Custer County Fair, only to find out that it is in Hermosa. For those of you who haven’t been to Hermosa, it is 19 miles south of Rapid City on Highway 79. This is how it is going to work.
You will enter the drive-in theater in your vehicle, pass a check-in table where you will receive literature from the candidates in a bag, along with a bottle of water. Next, you proceed to your parking spot, never having to leave your vehicle. Modern day drive-in theaters have it set up so you listen on a radio station and do not have speakers to put in your car.
That reminds me of growing up on a small farm south of Watertown, SD. We had drive-in church! We thought it was great because we didn’t have to dress up like we did for “real” church. You remember. The service that used to be in the church sanctuary? Anyway, I remember my mom getting upset with my dad and I because we would divide the parking lot in half and play poker, using the cars in our sectors’ license plates! Boy, did I digress there. Sorry about that!
All District 30 Republican legislative candidates have committed to attend. They are:
Rep. Julie Frye-Mueller and George Kotti running for Senate. The top vote-getter in this race goes against Gideon Oakes, the Libertarian candidate, in the General Election on Nov. 3rd.
Trish Ladner, Kwinn Neff, Florence Thompson and myself, Rep. Tim Goodwin for the House of Representatives. The top TWO vote-getters in the June 2nd Primary Election in this race will be going to Pierre, as there isn’t anyone running against us in November.
Also committed to attend, schedule permitting:
Senator Mike Rounds who is running against Scyller Borglum for U.S. Senate.
Congressman Dustin Johnson and Elizabeth May, running for U.S. House of Representatives.
The candidates will be up front on a stage with a podium and we’ll have what we call in Custer County “An Event!”
Seating, I mean parking, is limited, so get there early. Donations to offset expenses will be accepted along with coveted Custer County T-shirts and polo shirts for a donation.
A couple comments on voting:
1.You can vote now at your county courthouse up until June 1st.
2.On June 2nd you can vote as always on our state’s Primary date.
3.Absentee Voting
a.If you didn’t get an application in the mail to send in for a ballot, you are not registered to vote. This went to ALL registered voters; Republicans, Democrats, Independents. You have until May 18th to register to vote if you are not already a registered voter.
b.Once you receive your ballot, you need to put postage on it. Two $.55 stamps will do it. If you don’t put postage on it, your absentee ballot will be returned to you by the post office. If there is no return address on the big envelope with your ballot inside, it will go to a dead file and your votes will not be tabulated. So, put postage on the big envelope with your ballot. Even if postage is short, the County Auditor will get your ballot and your votes will be counted.
c.Don’t forget to sign the back of the envelope.
To the citizens of South Dakota and to the men and women in uniform, in honor of all who served, in respectful memory of all who fell, and in great appreciation to those who serve today, Thank You, for giving me the opportunity to represent you.
Tim R. Goodwin, District 30 Representative
